MY DESIGN IDEAS & ADVICE
This lovely jumper uses very simple rib and cable patterns, but the design makes them look more complicated than they really are. This is one of the best things about knitting: simple stitches used in simple patterns can create beautiful effects.
And if you fancied this in an adult size then… ta dah! I’ve designed a version in an adult size in my Simple Knits book.
CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop shoulder. The neck edge is picked up and knitted. There are buttonholes on the front edging.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing at the neck shaping, increasing, two simple cables, cast off, picking up stitches at neck. Joining seams. Sewing on buttons.
Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch and three needle cast off.
YARN
2(3:3:4:4) 100g hank(s) of WYS Bluefaced Leicester DK.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 225m/246yds per 100g.
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.75mm and 4mm.
Cable needle.
NOTIONS
3(3:4:4:4) buttons.
GAUGE (tension)
25 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm/4ins square over cable pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
