MY DESIGN IDEAS & ADVICE
This is such a fun and addictive hat to knit — I’ve made several already and each one looks completely different depending on the colours you choose!
It’s worked in the round, so you’ll need 4mm double-pointed needles for the top of the hat. The pattern starts with a simple rib, then moves into my favourite ridge stitch. I played around with yarns and used a variegated shade in the spaces between the pronounced ridges, which gives a twinkle of colour that changes depending on how you wear the hat.
You can wear it like a loose beanie with the ribbing flat, or turn the ribbing up for a snug, fitted look.
The first version I knitted had a solid colour as shade A and a variegated yarn as shade B. Then I made another using two solid shades, with shade B slightly darker to create a lovely depth and contrast. One of the best bits? No sewing up — just securing those last few stitches at the top!
Please note: the yarn originally used for this design has been discontinued, but I’ve suggested a great substitute. I’ve helped lots of knitters in the studio choose colours in the new yarn — and the finished hats look fab!
CONSTRUCTION
The hat is knitted in the round in one piece from the bottom up.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing, knitting in the round, simple striping.
YARN
One hank each of WYS Bluefaced Leicester DK in shade A & shade B.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 225m/246yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.25mm and 4mm (40cm length) circular needles.
4mm double pointed needles.
GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles. It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE & FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit adult head. Due to the nature of the rib pattern & individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 48cm to 56cm.
