MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This simple garter stitch raglan cardigan is full of those tiny details that make it just a little bit different. It’s knitted all in one piece up to the armholes, so there are no side seams to sew – a lovely feature if you’re after a straightforward knit. However, knitting in one piece can sometimes lack the structure that seams provide, so I’ve added a small detail that creates the look of “fake seams” to give it a neat finish while still keeping the knitting easy.
I love designing pieces that are simple to make but have a little something special – a detail that catches your eye or makes the piece unique.
This unisex cardigan is called Marino, inspired by the Latin word Marinus, meaning “of the sea”. I named it this because the yarn I used for the first sample reminded me of the sea – calm, soft and full of gentle waves.
CONSTRUCTION
The back and two fronts are knitted in one piece from the bottom up until the armholes. The sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in pieces. The raglan armholes and sleeves are joined together. The neck edging is knitted from live stitches from holders so there are no stitches to pick up.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, increasing on sleeves, decreasing at armholes, sewing on buttons. Joining sleeve seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
1(1:2:2:2) 100g hank(s) of 4 ply yarn.
The original yarn had 405m/442yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3mm.
NOTIONS
3(3:3:4:4) buttons.
GAUGE (tension)
26 stitches and 52 rows to 10cm/4ins square over dotty garter stitch pattern. I obtained this gauge with 3mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
