My design ideas and advice: This simple garter stitch cardigan is perfect for new knitters or for those coming back to knitting and want to try out their skills on a straight forward easy pattern.
This cardigan’s body is basically squares/rectangles with a teeny tiny bit of shaping on the fronts at the neck. With this in mind, make sure the front edges are neat and join in any new balls at the side seams.
If you would like to see this cardigan’s cousin, with a double-breasted finish, look no further than the Leighton Jacket.
Love this cardigan and wish it came in an adult size? I designed versions of this in the Fiona Cardigan the Charlotte Cardigan (in garter stitch) and Halyard in Kilcarra Tweed Simple Knits.
For this pattern I used:
Yarn & Amounts: 3(3:4:4:5) 50g balls of merino cotton DK (50% merino wool & 50% cotton, 120m/131yds per 50g) in shade A.
Oddment (about 10-20g) of dk weight yarn.
Needles: 4mm.
Notions: 3 buttons.
Gauge (tension): 22 stitches and 40 rows to 10cm/4ins square over garter stitch using 4mm needles.
