MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
The granny square. Probably the very first thing that comes to mind when someone hears the word “crochet.” Everyone has a theory about where the name comes from, and it often brings a little giggle – which always makes me curious! But that’s a whole other conversation about the hidden power of wise older women.
What I love about the granny square is that it simply works. It’s well loved, endlessly versatile, and such a joy to make. I enjoy letting simple, soothing stitches take shape while the natural fibres I’m working with bring the magic. The yarn you choose transforms the look completely. Some people prefer to know exactly how their project will turn out before they start. Me? I love the adventure of discovering how each yarn behaves as a granny square.
My work experience student, Freya, joined me on this journey. She crocheted squares in cotton, merino & mohair and Supermerino. The Supermerino squares became this scarf – soft, cosy and full of charm. I also tried the same idea in aran weight yarn and it created a completely different look. That’s the beauty of granny squares: one simple pattern, endless possibilities.
CONSTRUCTION
Crochet from the middle out to make squares which are crocheted together.
TECHNIQUES USED
UK Terms. Slip knot, slip stitch, chain, trebles.
YARN
Two 100g balls of Purl &Jane Supermerino in shade A AND one 100g ball each in shade B and shade C.
100% merino wool, 65m/71yds per 100g
SUGGESTED HOOK
12mm.
GAUGE (tension)
One square of four rounds is approx. 18cm x 18cm. I obtained this gauge with 12mm hook.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your hook size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Approx. 18cm wide x 162cm
