MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This is a super simple hat pattern – perfect for beginners wanting to practise their purl stitches. It looks great on everyone and has a lovely shape that reminds me of a 1920s cloche hat. I’ve always loved the fashion of that decade, and I think it’s wonderful that you can knit something so stylish with just a few stitches.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up with one seam.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
One 100g hank of BRE Woodnote Aran.
34% Bluefaced Leicester, 33% Masham & Merino Wool, 154m/168yds per 100g.
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
5mm.
GAUGE (tension)
18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit adult head. Due to the nature of the rib pattern and individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 50cm to 58cm. If the knitter gets the gauge as above the finished circumference will be approx. 54cm.
