MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I designed this hat because I wanted to bring together two of my favourite stitches: moss stitch and the rib pattern I first used on the Caspian Hat.
I love moss stitch. But since opening the studio, I’ve discovered it’s not for everyone! For me, it’s all about the rhythm — the gentle movement of the yarn back and forth between the needles to create that beautiful texture. I love how a purl stitch sits over a knit stitch to give a totally different look.
That’s what I love most about knitting — with just two stitches, knit and purl, you can create an infinite number of patterns. And moss stitch is one of the first — simple, classic and so effective.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up with one seam.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
One 100g hank of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm and 5mm.
GAUGE (tension)
18 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over moss stitch. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit adult head. Due to the nature of the rib pattern and individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 48cm to 56cm.
