MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE

The Kura Hat is the perfect pattern for learning to knit in the round or, for experienced knitters, a satisfying weekend project to whip up a quick hat.

It’s a great unisex pattern, suitable for both men and women. This hat is the baby sibling to my popular aran-weight Caspian Hat design, created after knitters visiting my Skipton studio asked for a DK version.

While inspired by the Caspian Hat, I like each design to have its own twist. The Caspian is knitted flat and sewn together, but the Kura Hat is worked in the round – starting with short circular needles, then switching to double pointed needles for the crown. If you’re new to circulars, don’t worry – it’s much easier (and more fun!) than it might seem.

The best part? When you finish shaping the crown, you’re done – no sewing up needed. Just pop it straight on and enjoy your new hat!

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted in the round in one piece from the bottom up.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing, knitting in the round, cast off.

YARN
100g hank of WYS Bluefaced Leicester DK.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g.
The hat used 50g/113m of the 100g ball.

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4mm circular needles (40cm length)
Set of 4 double pointed 4mm needles.

GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch pattern when slightly stretched. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit adult head. Due to the nature of the rib pattern and individual gauges, the finished circumference can vary from 50cm to 58cm. If the knitter gets the gauge as above the finished circumference will be approx. 50cm.
