MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This is one of those classic sets I find myself reaching for again and again. The Jordan Hat is a simple, timeless beanie – easy to knit, lovely to wear and the perfect project whether you’re just learning how to knit in the round or want a relaxing weekend knit.
It’s knitted in the round so there’s no sewing up, apart from a little stitch or two at the very top – a real bonus if you’re not keen on sewing seams (though if you are curious, I promise I can show you the joy of it on my Professional Finishing workshop!).
I wear my Jordan Hat all through autumn, winter and well into spring. It’s just the right warmth and weight – so comfy, I often forget I’m wearing it until I realise I’m not!
And to go with the hat is a fab little scarf. I really enjoyed knitting this one. It’s short and neat – just right for keeping the chill off your neck without lots of extra length.
It’s a great gift to make, too – classic, wearable and satisfying to knit.
CONSTRUCTION
The hat is knitted in the round in one piece from the bottom up with one seam. The scarf is knitted in rows from the bottom up in one piece.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing, knitting in the round with the hat, knitting in rows with the scarf, cast off.
YARN
One 100g hank of Donegal Twists DK for hat.
72% merino wool & 28% British wool, 270m/295yds per 100g
One 100g hank of Donegal Twists DK for scarf.
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4mm (40cm length) circular needle & four double pointed 4mm needles for the hat.
4mm for the scarf.
GAUGE (tension)
21 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Size of the Hat: to fit adult head due to the nature of the rib pattern & individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 52cm to 60cm. If the knitter gets the gauge as above the finished circumference will be approx. 54cm.
Measurement of scarf approx. 18cm x 85cm.
