MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This design is another updated version from a book I wrote back in 2008 – before the days when I was doing PDF patterns! It’s one of my favourites and I’ve just made a few gentle tweaks to help the knitting flow, so you can pick up your needles and relax into the soothing stitches.
All of my patterns are easy to knit to your chosen length – and if you’re an experienced knitter, you’ll know how simple that is to do. But for this one, I’ve included two length options for both the body and the sleeves. So if you fancied this hoody with longer sleeves, you can – the instructions are all in there!
As you can see, I’ve always loved this kind of stitch pattern. I’ve used it in many other designs over the years – like the Tom Jumper, Leannan Jumper, Ravenscar Jumper, Ravenscar Cardigan and Hubberholme Jumper for little ones, just to name a few!
CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are set in. The hood is picked up and knitted.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing, increasing. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: three needle cast off and mattress stitch.
YARN
4(5:6:7:8:9) 100g hanks of P&J Yorkshire Yarn Bluefaced Leicester DK for short length and short sleeves version.
6(7:8:8:9:10) 100g hanks of P&J Yorkshire Yarn Bluefaced Leicester DK for long length and long sleeves version.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 230m/251yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.75mm and 4mm.
GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm/4ins square over garter stitch rib pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a positive ease of 1-4ins/2-10cm at the chest.
