MY DESIGN IDEAS & ADVICE
The Caspian Hat in aran weight yarn has been one of my most popular patterns — and it’s been such a joy to see it knitted in so many different yarns and colours over the years! One of the most common questions I’m asked is: “Can I knit it in a different weight yarn?” That’s why I designed the Kura Hat (a DK version, worked in the round) — and this pattern, by popular demand, is the Chunky Caspian Hat.
This chunky version is perfect for experienced knitters looking for a quick project to warm a chilly head or knit as a thoughtful handmade gift. It’s also a great introduction for beginners learning how to work with knit and purl in the same row — a simple yet satisfying way to grow your confidence.
Quick, cosy and full of texture — it’s a pattern you’ll want to knit again and again.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat from the bottom up in one piece with one seam.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
Two 100g hanks of Studio Donegal Soft Chunky.
100% Merino wool, 125m/ 69yds per 100g
SUGGESTED NEEDLES
6mm.
GAUGE (tension)
16 stitches and 21 rows to 10cm square over rib pattern. I obtained this gauge with 6mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE & FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit adult head. Due to the nature of the rib pattern & individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 50cm to 60cm. If the knitter gets the gauge as above, the finished circumference will be approx. 54cm.
