My design ideas and advice: The Hilarie Tank Top uses one of my favourite stitches, I do love a garter stitch rib in a variety of different ways. I love a relaxing knit where you have a row that you have to ‘concentrate’ on and the alternating one where you can just ‘switch off’ with, this is the pure knit row.

I designed this tank top without any armhole edging in my mind but when I finished it I thought it would look good with an edging too, so I’ve included those instructions in the pattern but please feel free not to do the armhole edging.

All the Purl &Jane pattern names have meanings and over the years I forget why I named them a particular name so I’ve decided to include the reason to remind me and hopefully to make you smile.

I named this tank top Hilarie because it can be a male or female name and this tank top is unisex. How I came to the name Hilarie was through a Google search. I put ‘rib’ into the search engine and it came up with RIBs – Rigid Inflatable Boats. I thought who uses RIBs? The RNLI and their founder was Sir William Hillary. The name Hillary is derived from Latin and means ‘cheerful’ There are many variations in the spelling and I chose this one.

The Hilarie Tank Top is knitted in pieces, a front and back, and is joined together. I used mattress stitch.

For this pattern I used:
