MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This cardigan is the sibling to the Crag Jumper – but with a twist. Here, the honeycomb cable wraps around the sides, giving a warm woolly hug to your little one every time they wear it.
My niece once told me that’s what she loves most about wearing hand knits – it’s like having a big hug all the time. And that’s exactly the feeling I wanted to capture in this cosy design.
CONSTRUCTION
The back, left front, right front, two sleeves are knitted flat in separate pieces and joined together. Neck edging and buttonhole bands are picked up after the pieces are knitted.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, simple cables, increasing, decreasing, picking up stitches, buttonholes, pockets, joining seams, sewing on buttons.
Optional but recommended to create a joy of joining your pieces: mattress stitch seaming and three needle cast off.
YARN
3(3:4:4:5) 100g hanks of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/178yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm and 5mm.
Cable needle.
NOTIONS
5(6:6:7:7) buttons.
GAUGE (tension)
28 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm/4ins square over narrow rib pattern. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
