Crag Jumper Pattern

MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
The Crag Jumper is a perfect example of how a simple cable can be both striking and exciting to knit. In this design, I’ve used two of my favourite cable patterns – one I call the honeycomb (I’m not sure if that’s its ‘official’ name, but it always makes me think of bees and honey), and the other is the cable plait.

The cable plait brings back memories of childhood, playing hairdressers and plaiting my sister’s hair (which, of course, naturally led to finding scissors and really playing hairdressers but that’s another story)! More recently, I’ve been looking into the meanings behind different cables, which I find fascinating. Knitting is so much more than just wool and stitches – it represents love, joy, and kindness. While I can’t say for certain, I like to think that the honeycomb cable symbolises luck, while the plait represents health and happiness – making this a truly meaningful gift to knit and give.

CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in seperate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop shoulder. The neck edge is picked up and knitted. There are buttonholes on one shoulder.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing at the neck shaping, increasing, three simple cables, cast off, picking up stitches at neck. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch and three needle cast off.

YARN
3(4:4:5:5) 100g hanks of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm and 5mm.

NOTIONS
Three buttons

GAUGE (tension)
28 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm/4ins square over middle cable pattern. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
