MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I designed these for my Learn To Knit class, so they’re perfect for beginners. Starting something new can feel overwhelming, so I wanted to create a project that used just one ball of yarn. That way, you can simply pick up a ball, cast on and see how you like it – without worrying about lots of stitches or materials. And what better way to use one ball of chunky yarn than a pair of fingerless mittens!
For experienced knitters, these are a quick, satisfying knit – ideal for stash-busting or for trying out the beautiful Soft Donegal yarn. They’re also perfect for those evenings when you suddenly realise you’ll need warm hands tomorrow, or when you want to give an old coat a new lease of life with a handmade touch.
And of course, they’re my go-to when I need to keep my hands warm but my fingers free – especially when I’m handing out treats to the dog on chilly walks!
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up with one seam.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, cast off. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
One 100g hank of Soft Chunky
100% Merino wool, 125m/136yds per 100g
This amount makes two pairs
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
6mm.
GAUGE (tension)
14 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm square over garter stitch. I obtained this gauge with 6mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Approx. 15cm x 15cm.
