MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I love this cable. I love it so much I’ve used it on many patterns already, and I want to use it on many more that are floating around in my head!
In the winter months, there’s something so soothing about wrapping up in gorgeous hand knits to protect against the chills – suddenly that cold feels bracing and good. I love a mitten too, because it just feels like you’re wrapped up in a hand-knit hug.
These mittens were designed, along with eight others, in 2017 using an Irish yarn spun in Donegal, so I gave all the patterns Irish names. Craic (pronounced “crack”) means high-spirited fun – the serious work of play. A perfect name for these mittens.
They’re knitted on dpns, so the only sewing you need to do is the thumb seam. And if you fancy matching socks, there are the Gael Socks. If you love this cable as much as I do, you can also knit it on two cardigans: Farrimond in aran or Faremanne in dk.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted on double pointed needles in the round in one piece from the cuff.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, in the round, simple cable, cast off, three needle cast off. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your thumb seam: mattress stitch.
YARN
One 100g hank of BRE Donegal Twists DK
72% Merino & 28% British Wool, 270m/295yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.75 mm double pointed needles (set of 4).
NOTIONS
Cable needle.
GAUGE (tension)
24 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over rib pattern. I obtained this gauge with 3.75mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
