MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This cushion uses the same diamond cable pattern as the Farrimond Cardigan from my Simple Knits book. I created this cushion for those that want to practise the technique before they tried the garment.
I designed it with the rich history and symbolism of cable knitting in mind. In traditional fisherman folklore, different stitches hold different meanings. The diamond cable is said to represent the shape of a fishing mesh — a wish for a successful catch — while the classic rope cable symbolises safety and good fortune at sea.
I love this deeper meaning behind stitches. For me, it captures exactly what knitting is all about: something made with love, full of meaning and offering the knitter a soothing, calming journey as they create a beautiful, thoughtful gift.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat from the bottom up in one piece, folded and then the side seams are joined together.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, six cable techniques, buttonholes, cast off. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
Five 50g balls of Donegal Aran Tweed.
100% Pure new wool, 80m/88yds per 50g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm.
Cable needle (optional).
NOTIONS
7 buttons.
Cushion pad to fit. I used a 40cm/16ins x 40cm/16ins cushion pad.
GAUGE (tension)
16 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over moss stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
40cm/16ins x approximately 82cm/32ins.
