My design ideas and advice: These mittens were designed for my first ever Purl &Jane Retreat in October 2018. I can’t remember what came first, the Bempton Jumper or the Bempton Mittens? They were both designed in 2018 so I’m not sure! I usually design a garment and then do accessories in the same pattern. I like to do this for knitters who are a little nervous about trying new stitch techniques on garments. An accessory gives them the space to get used to the pattern on a smaller item and see how easy it is (and they are easy once you get used to the rhythm of the repeats!)
These mittens are knitted on straight needles with one side seam on the main bit and one small seam on the thumb.
For this pattern I used:
Yarn & Amounts: One 100g hank of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran – Undyed (100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/181yds per 100g)
Metres: Approx. 100m
Needles: 5mm
Notions: Two stitch holders, cable needle (optional)
Gauge (tension): 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm/4ins square over pattern when stretched using 5mm needles
Size: To fit adult hand
