MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
As you may have noticed, I love simple stitch patterns — the ones you can truly relax into. I love the knit stitch (so meditative!), but I also enjoy how a few purls scattered among the knits can create something really beautiful.
This cushion uses the same rib pattern as the Pengelly Jumper from my Simple Knits book. That’s why it’s called Pengelly’s Cushion! It’s a wonderfully soothing rib with a subtle difference: a row of knit stitches that brings texture and rhythm. It’s the kind of pattern that’s perfect for calming your mind in hectic moments — or for knitting away while watching your favourite show.
I really believe everyone can knit — but I understand that starting a garment can sometimes feel like a big step. So whenever I can, I design smaller accessory projects using the same stitch patterns as my garments. That way, you can practise on a manageable project before jumping into something larger.
Since I first designed the Pengellys, I’ve used this rib pattern — or variations of it — in so many more patterns: the Ravenscar Jumper, Hubberholme Jumper for children, Leannan Jumper, Ravenscar Cardigan, Heaton Tank Top… to name just a few!
This stitch has become a real favourite — and I hope you enjoy it just as much as I do!
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat from the bottom up in one piece, folded and then the side seams are joined together.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, buttonholes and cast off. Joining seams. Sewing on buttons. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your seams: mattress stitch.
YARN
Five 50g balls of Donegal Aran Tweed
100% pure new wool, 80m/88yds per 50g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm.
NOTIONS
Cushion pad to fit (approx. 35cm x 45cm)
Four buttons (size is approx. 20mm in diameter)
GAUGE (tension)
17 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over garter stitch rib. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
33cm x approx. 92cm
