MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
After designing the Clacton Jumper, I started wondering – can you knit a hat from the top down? I played around with a few ideas and this hat is the result! The Superspace Hat starts right at the top, so you shape the crown first and then simply knit down to your desired length. That makes it perfect for using up yarn in your stash or customising the fit – no guessing needed.
It’s knitted flat and uses just knit, purl and inc1 stitches – simple techniques with a fun twist on construction.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the top down with one seam.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, increasing. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
One 100g ball of Superchunky yarn
65m/71yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
9mm.
GAUGE (tension)
10 stitches and 14 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 9mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
There are two sizes: small-medium or medium-large adult head. Due to the nature of the rib pattern and individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 48cm to 60cm.
If the knitter gets the gauge as above, the finished circumference will be approx. 50 (56)cm.
I chat about the design process of the hat in the first few episodes of my weekly design vlog. Here is the one with the end result. Obviously the pattern is now available to download!
