MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I designed these socks years ago – long before my Skipton studio, back when I was a freelance hand-knit designer working with an American distributor. I’ve always loved a DK sock – they’re so quick to knit and feel like a warm hug for your feet.
Over the years, I’ve used lots of different types of yarn for these socks – some of which I’d now call ‘vintage’ (which sounds so much better than discontinued, don’t you think?). I love knitting them in Bluefaced Leicester or Shetland wool and other yarns with beautiful natural fibres, but they do eventually need a bit of darning!
For socks that need to last a little longer – especially in wellies – I use WYS Jacob DK. It is a hard wearing wool with a ‘traditional’ feel. I wear my Simple Socks almost every winter, rotating a few pairs to keep the longevity of each one, all are worn in my wellies!
Warm feet mean warm heart and body!
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted on double pointed needles in the round in one piece from the cuff down.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, double pointed needles, in the round, decreasing, grafting stitches together. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your stitches: three needle cast off.
YARN
One 100g hank of WYS Croft Shetland DK.
100% Shetland wool, 225m/246yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
Four double pointed 3.75mm needles.
GAUGE (tension)
24 stitches and 32 rows to 10cm square over rib pattern when slightly stretched. I obtained this gauge with 3.75mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
UK size 5 or desired foot length as highlighted in the pattern.
