Description

MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I love designing simple, easy-to-knit patterns that might look complicated to a beginner but are actually very straightforward. And for the experienced knitter? I like to create designs that act as refreshers between more complex patterns – the kind you can relax into, switch off and just enjoy the rhythm of the stitches.

I originally designed this jumper for gentlemen, but as with all my patterns, it works beautifully for all shapes and genders. I love designing simple handknits for men and I’ve always loved wearing these shapes myself too.

The Devon Jumper is an updated and revised version of my Dorothy Jumper, with a longer body and a neater rib. It’s ideal if you want to adjust the length to suit you, or you can simply follow the pattern and enjoy the soothing simplicity of stocking stitch. As with most of my patterns, I’ve added little details to make the knitting more enjoyable and to shape the garment – it’s often those small touches that make the biggest difference.

CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are set in. The neck edge is picked up and knitted.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing at armhole and neck shaping, increasing. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: three needle cast off and mattress stitch.

YARN
5(6:6:7:7) 100g hanks of P &J Yorkshire Yarn Bluefaced Leicester DK.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 230m/251yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.75mm and 4mm.

GAUGE (tension)
21 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm/4ins square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a positive ease of 1-2ins/2-5cm at the chest.
