MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This is a Purl &Jane first – the first pattern I designed to be knitted almost entirely in the round. It’s worked from the bottom up in the round, right up to the stitch pattern at the top of the jumper. Then, the knitting is divided for the front and back and worked in rows, before the neckline and sleeves are completed in the round.
The sleeves are picked up around the armhole and knitted downwards to the cuff, which means you can knit them to your perfect length. And if the cuffs ever wear out, you can simply unravel and reknit them – great for longevity!
You might notice there are just two actual chest sizes, but four size options in total. That’s because the jumper is designed to suit many different body shapes – it can be worn oversized or more fitted depending on your choice. It’s the length of the stitch pattern that creates the look.
CONSTRUCTION
The back and front are knitted in the round in one piece from the bottom up, then divided to knit the back and then front in rows. The sleeves are picked up and knitted from the armhole down to the cuff. The neck edges are picked up and knitted.
TECHNIQUES USED
Knitting in the round and rows. Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing, increasing, simple cables, picking up stitches, cast off. Joining shoulder seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: three needle cast off.
YARN
4(5:6:6) 100g balls of BRE Donegal Twists DK.
72% Merino & 28% British Wool, 270m/295yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.75mm circular knitting needle :: 40cm length.
4mm circular knitting needle :: 40cm and 100cm lengths.
Cable needle this is optional as I don’t use a cable needle to do these cables.
GAUGE (tension)
20 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm/4ins square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles. 22 stitches and 32 rows to 10cm/4ins square over rib & cable pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a positive ease of 10-20ins/25-50cm at the chest.
