Description

MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This is the ‘knitted in pieces’ version of the Popplewell Jumper. There’s also a version knitted in the round which I designed first, but after chatting to knitters who loved the look of the jumper but didn’t fancy knitting it in the round, I created this version just for you.

I love this jumper so much that I wanted to make it available to all types of knitters. It’s a straightforward knit – the pieces are worked without shaping – but there are little details in the pattern that help create drape and shape.

You might notice there are just two actual chest sizes, but four size options in total. That’s because the jumper is designed to suit many body shapes – it can be worn oversized or closer fitting, depending on your size. It’s the length of the stitch pattern that helps create the right look.

CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop. The neck edge is picked up and knitted.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, simple cable, decreasing, increasing, cast off. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.

YARN
4(5:6:6) 100g balls of BRE Donegal Twists DK.
72% Merino & 28% British Wool, 270m/295yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.75mm and 4mm.
Cable needle (this is optional as I don’t use a cable needle to do these cables).

GAUGE (tension)
20 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm/4ins square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles. 22 stitches and 32 rows to 10cm/4ins square over rib & cable pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a positive ease of 10-20ins/25-50cm at the chest.
