Description

MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I love the simplicity of this cushion. The gentle rhythm of double crochet repeats, and before you know it these little squares become a cushion… or even a blanket if you fancy crocheting more. They’re quite addictive!

This is the crochet version of my knitted Chusi Cushion. The Chusi Cushion is made up of garter stitch squares – the perfect pattern to begin your knitting journey – and this crochet version offers the same gentle introduction. It’s a lovely way to get used to your hook and yarn, and to begin a new creative addiction.

I joined the squares by crocheting them together. Wherever possible, I like to finish a project in the same way I began it – so crochet was the perfect way to bring these pieces together.

CONSTRUCTION
Individual squares crocheted flat from the bottom up and joined together to make the cushion.

TECHNIQUES USED
Chain, double crochet. Joining seams – I crocheted them together.

YARN
One 100g hank each of WYS Croft Shetland Aran (solids) in shade A and WYS Croft Shetland Aran (tweed) in shade B.
100% Shetland wool, 166m/181yds per 100g

SUGGESTED HOOK
5mm.

NOTIONS
Cushion pad to fit.
I used a 30cm x 30cm cushion pad

GAUGE (tension)
15dc and 16 rows to 10cm square over dc pattern. I obtained this gauge with 5mm hook. This is the beauty of crochet – you can crochet to your chosen size, so you can buy a cushion pad to fit your gauge. However, if you wanted to adjust your gauge this is the way to do that – if your gauge is tighter (16 or 17), then use a larger hook, e.g. 5.5mm, if it is looser (13 or 14), then use a smaller hook, e.g. 4.5mm.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
For one square:
16cm x 16cm.
