MY DESIGN IDEAS & ADVICE
I originally designed this one for the boys, but as soon as it came back from my knitter, I knew I needed one too!
It’s an easy, fuss-free knit with no complicated stitches or tricky techniques – just simple, satisfying knitting.
I designed it with a relaxed, floppy fit, but if you prefer a snug beanie, just knit it a little shorter.
Over the years, this has become a real Purl &Jane favourite, and I love spotting it “out in the wild” around Skipton.
The best moments? Seeing a hat I recognise on someone I don’t – because a knitter has gifted it to a friend or loved one!

A great project for beginners and seasoned knitters alike, this hat is a joy to knit and even better to wear.

CONSTRUCTION
This hat is knitted flat from the bottom up in one piece with a seam.

TECHNIQUES USED
cast on, knit, purl, decreasing.

YARN
One 100g hank of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran – Undyed (100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g).

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
4mm and 4.5mm

GAUGE (tension)
18 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over rib pattern when slightly stretched. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles. It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

SIZE & FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
to fit adult head
due to the nature of the rib pattern & individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 50cm to 60cm. If the knitter gets the gauge as above the finished circumference will be approx. 55cm.
