MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
The Baby Clayton Cardigan uses the same stitch pattern as the adult Clayton Vest. I love this stitch detail – and I also love moss stitch! When I mention moss stitch in the studio, the reaction is always one of two extremes: “Oh yes, I love it too!” or “Do you? I don’t!” – never anything in between!
That’s why this pattern works so well for everyone. There are a few rows of stocking stitch alternating with moss stitch, so if you love moss stitch, you can look forward to those rows, and if you don’t, you can relax knowing the stocking stitch is just around the corner.
This cardigan is unisex and keeps things simple yet distinctive with the button detail – perfect for adding your own touch with the right coloured buttons. It’s also knitted in one piece up to the armholes, making it a straightforward and satisfying project.
CONSTRUCTION
The back and two fronts are knitted in one piece from the bottom up until the armholes then divided to knit the back and then each front in rows. The sleeves are
knitted flat from the bottom up in pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop shoulder. The neck edge is picked up and knitted. There are two buttonholes.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, increasing on sleeves, buttonholes, cast off, sewing on two buttons. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch and three needle cast off.
YARN
1(1:2:2) 100g hank(s) of Fyberspates Vivacious 4 ply
100% Merino wool, 365m/399yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3mm.
NOTIONS
Two buttons.
GAUGE (tension)
26 stitches and 36 rows to 10cm/4ins square over stocking stitch pattern. I obtained this gauge with 3mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
