This week, I did something I haven’t done in a while – I started a brand new design.

The idea had been percolating for a bit (OK, a long time). There’s a very long list of designs I need to finish, and an equally long list of ones I want to start. So when the list gets too long and the choice feels impossible, I go back to what I always say: just begin.
One stitch.
And that’s what I did last Sunday. One stitch that grew into a few rows, then a few more. The start of a waistcoat. The Max Waistcoat, in fact.
I decided to document the journey, sharing a bit each day on Instagram and Facebook Stories. It’s been lovely having company on this adventure – thank you to everyone who’s messaged or commented so far!
Here’s how the week unfolded:

- Sunday: Cast on the Max Waistcoat. First draft written. Excited to be designing again.

- Monday: A crochet workshop during the day meant evening knitting while watching Towards Zero.

- Tuesday: In the Skipton Studio – admin-heavy day, but managed a bit of knitting during quiet spells

- and two episodes of Paradise on Tuesday evening where I knitted and completed the armhole shaping.

- Wednesday: A classic ‘frog day’.

- Ripped back the armhole shaping and rethought the design length this Wednesday evening.

- Thursday: It happened… the spark of a new idea! A sock design burst into my mind and I just had to cast on. Didn’t even photograph the start – I was too keen to get knitting!

- Friday: More sock progress. This has officially become two design journeys in one!
- Saturday: A knitting-free day – sometimes the best thing for creativity.
What started as a single project has now become two, and I’m excited to see where they lead. If you missed the daily updates, you can catch up in my Instagram Highlights or join me for next week’s continuation.
Maybe this journey has inspired you to cast on something new – or return to something that’s been waiting patiently in a bag. Either way, one stitch is all it takes.
