When I first picked up a hook to make a Granny Square, I had no idea how much joy that little square would bring – not just to me, but to so many crocheters who come through my Skipton studio doors.
There’s something magical about the Granny Square. It’s simple. It’s timeless. And it’s the perfect place to start if you’ve never crocheted before or have tried and felt a little unsure. That’s why I’ve created this gentle, supportive workshop just for you – whether you’re a total beginner or a knitter curious to try something new.

The joy of one square
Crochet is for everyone. Everyone can crochet – just like everyone can knit – but sometimes we expect to be brilliant the moment we start. That’s just not how it works. We begin with one loop, one stitch, one square, at a time. And in this workshop, I’ll be right there beside you, helping you find your rhythm.
We’ll start slowly, go gently, and before you know it you’ll have a square or two in your hands – and a whole new world of creative possibility opening up.

What happens in the workshop?
The Granny Square workshop is calm and cosy. The groups are small so I can make sure everyone gets the help they need. Everyone learns differently – some people like to be shown, some like to do – and I love seeing those lightbulb moments when it just clicks.
We’ll look at how to hold the hook and yarn, how to make the basic stitches, and how it all comes together to make your first Granny Square. From there, we’ll build confidence, learn how to change colours (if you want to), and how to take that first square and turn it into a blanket, cushion cover, bag or anything your heart dreams up.
A fresh start or a happy refresher
This workshop isn’t just for complete beginners – it’s also lovely if you learnt to crochet years ago and want to start again. Or if you’re a knitter looking for something new to make. I’ve taught workshops for over 20 years – from the USA & Canada to the flagship John Lewis on Oxford Street – and I’ve found the best learning happens in small, friendly groups where everyone can relax and where you are free to make mistakes.
One of the loveliest things I hear from people who come to my workshops is, “I didn’t think I’d be able to do it, but I did.” That makes me so happy.

And after the workshop? You’re not alone.
After the class, if you get stuck, forget a step or want help with a tricky bit, you can always pop back into the studio. I’m here to help – sometimes it only takes a minute to show you something that would take hours to figure out on your own. And if you can’t get to the studio, I’ve made YouTube videos to guide you through step by step (you can find them here).
I believe in keeping things simple, in taking our time and in enjoying every stitch. That’s the spirit behind this Granny Square workshop. No pressure. Just the joy of making something with your own hands – something that grows one stitch at a time.
I’d love to welcome you to the studio and start this crochet adventure with you.
