Week 4 – A Finished Pattern and a Fresh Start

This week, something exciting happened: I finished writing up the sock pattern!

If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that these socks weren’t exactly planned…they crept in while I was working on the Max Waistcoat. But I followed the pull of that small, soothing knit… and now it’s not just a finished pair of socks, it’s a finished pattern too! The version below was knitted by my lovely friend, these are the long ones knitted with one hank of the ByLaxtons Shepsoft DK.

I’ve called them the Pluto DK Socks, and I’ve absolutely loved the whole process of bringing them to life. The idea popped into my head while knitting the back of the waistcoat, and I just couldn’t resist. That’s what being a process knitter is all about – trusting the rhythm of your hands and allowing space for those unexpected sparks of inspiration.

If you’ve ever found joy in a quick, comforting knit, I think you’ll understand. Socks are like little pockets of happiness: small enough to finish in a few quiet evenings, satisfying enough to feel like a big achievement, and soft enough to bring comfort every time you wear them. This pair reminded me why I love designing – and why I sometimes need to take a detour to stay on track!

Writing up the pattern gave me that same sense of calm and purpose that knitting them did. And while the Max Waistcoat has been waiting patiently in my knitting basket, I’m going back to it now with a refreshed mindset and a few new ideas. I’m genuinely excited to pick it back up and keep sharing the journey with you.

So yes, Week 4 has been less about the waistcoat stitches and more about honouring where the creative process led me. That’s the beauty of documenting this design journey – it’s a reminder that every project has its own pace, and sometimes the scenic route is the most rewarding.

Back to the Max Waistcoat next week… though with a calmer mind and toasty toes, thanks to Pluto!
