MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
This scarf combines two of my favourite stitches – a simple cable framed with neat garter stitch edges.
It’s a great first project for anyone new to cables, with an easy-to-follow 8-row repeat. You only cable on two of those rows, the rest are just knit and purl, so once you’ve worked the twists you can relax into the rhythm of simple stitches.
Like all my scarves, I designed it to look good on both sides – because really, scarves don’t have a ‘right side’ or a ‘wrong side.’
I originally designed this scarf for gentlemen, but it works beautifully for anyone. And as with many projects, it spent a while on my needles: about two years to knit four balls… and then just one week to finish the last three! Of course, that wasn’t two years of solid knitting – more two years of waiting in a bag, followed by a couple of weeks of relaxed evening and weekend knitting.
The result is a timeless, textured scarf that’s as enjoyable to knit as it is to wear.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, two simple cables, cast off.
YARN
Four 100g hanks of Studio Donegal Soft Chunky.
100% merino wool, 125m/136yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
6mm.
GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 21 rows to 10cm square over honeycomb pattern. I obtained this gauge with 6mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
22cm (wide) x approx. 175cm (long).
