MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
When I received our second exclusive Purl &Jane Yorkshire yarn, Skipton Swaledale, from the spinners in 2016, I played around with different stitch techniques and found the perfect one for this bag. It’s one of my favourite textures – the chevron.
Skipton Swaledale had limited availability and such unique qualities that made it very individual. Since then, I’ve used Jacobs Aran to knit this bag, which has similar characteristics and makes a lovely substitute.
I designed the bag because I wanted something small and practical to carry my purse and phone in. I knitted a short strap, but it’s very easy to continue knitting the strap until it reaches your desired length – just keep in mind you may need a little extra yarn if you do.
CONSTRUCTION
Two pieces knitted flat in rows, folded in half with side seams joined to strap.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, slip stitch, buttonholes, cast off.
YARN
One 100g hank of WYS Jacobs Aran
100% Jacob Wool, 166m/182yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm.
NOTIONS
Two 40mm buttons.
GAUGE (tension)
21 stitches and 43 rows to 10cm square over chevron pattern. I obtain this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Approx. 21cm x 16cm x 2cm.
