MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I love experimenting with ribs, cables and decreases – and this little tank top is the result of a lot of that playful designing! I knitted it four or five times to get every detail just right. The cables needed to flow up the front, over the shoulders and down the back, so the rib pattern had to be the perfect repeat to keep everything balanced.
It might look simple, but this design definitely gave my designer’s brain a challenge! I wanted to make it easy and satisfying to knit, so there are no stitches to pick up – just smooth lines and simple shaping. Keep that in mind when joining in a new ball of yarn.
CONSTRUCTION
The back and front are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing at the armhole and neck shaping, two simple cables, cast off. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch and three needle cast off.
YARN
1(1:2:2:3) 100g hank(s) of WYS Bluefaced Leicester DK.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 225m/246yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.75mm and 4mm.
GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 32 rows to 10cm/4ins square over pattern when slightly stretched. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
