My design ideas and advice: The granny square. Probably the first thing that someone who doesn’t crochet thinks of when hearing the word crochet. Everyone has a theory about where the name comes from and it is sometimes met with giggling. Which makes me curious, but that leads onto a whole other debate about the hidden power of wise older women.
The granny square works, it is well loved and its possibilities are endless. I love working with simple soothing stitches and let the natural fibres I’m working with do all the work. The yarn you choose for your crochet creates such different looks. Some people might not like this, they might like to know exactly how it will look before they start. For me, I love the adventure of seeing how each natural fibre works. It’s exciting but I know what a granny square looks like and I know what a yarn knits like but how does it work as a crocheted granny square?
My work experience student, Freya crocheted some granny squares so she could go on this journey! She has used cotton, Mohair Tweed and Supermerino. The Supermerino granny squares were made into a scarf. And then I used Fable Aran to crochet a scarf too but it had a completely different look. Such fun!
For this pattern I used:
Yarn & Amounts: Two 100g balsl of Purl &Jane Supermerino in shade A
AND one 100g ball each in shade B and shade C.
Hook : 12mm.
Gauge (tension): one square measures 18cm x 18cm using 12mm hook.
Size: approx. 18cm x approx. 162cm.
The pattern for experienced crocheters: The pattern is super easy so for some you can do this will just the very basic instructions of 3 round granny square, swapping the shades in round one and two but keeping the third round the same shade on all of them. Sew together.
The download pattern is more beginner friendly with more instructions.
